What is Tech Neck?

With busy schedules and lifestyles, most of us probably don’t give our necks the attention it needs. However, the skin on our neck is thin and often exposed to sun, causing it to show signs of aging sooner than other parts of the body. On top of that, constantly bending our necks down to stare at our phones and computers can lead to “tech neck,” which refers to the lines and wrinkles on our necks. Other than causing wrinkles in the neck, repeated bending our heads down can also result in a double chin as well as shoulder and neck pains.

As we continue to rely on our technological devices, it is common to see more and more patients in their late 20’s or early 30’s coming in concerned with the wrinkles that have formed around their neck. At Essential Aesthetics, after extensive research, we have developed multiple treatments to combat tech neck for younger and older patients alike.

  1. Neuromodulators: We know that Botox and Dysport work to relax wrinkles on the face. Well, it can also be used on the neck muscle (platysma muscle) to help reduce lines and wrinkles that form on the neck. Patients that are concerned with vertical neck bands or lines can also use neuromodulators to temporarily reduce the muscle activity, resulting in a smoother neck.
  2. Radiofrequency (RF) devices: At Essential Aesthetics, we offer a tested combination therapy that targets different skin layers individually. First, we use TriPollar RF, which heats the deep dermis causing the regeneration of collagen and elastin fibers. This creates a tightening effect on the skin. We then use the RF microneedling device which activates the body’s natural healing process by applying ultra-thin electrodes which thermally ablate the epidermis. This also encourages the generation of new and healthy skin.
  3. Lasers: PicoFractional and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) are two lasers we offer to help treat wrinkles. PicoFractional uses photo-acoustic energy combined with high energy to reach deep into the skin, treating lines and wrinkles as well as pigmented lesions, age spots, sun spots, and much more. This also helps to stimulate more collagen.

IPL Photofacial delivers light pulses to the skin which penetrate the tissue and create heat to target skin imperfections in a controlled manner.

  1. Fillers: Essential Aesthetics uses a customized concentration of Juvederm, Restylane, or Sculptra to help combat neck lines. Juvederm and Restylane are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in our body. Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is a collagen stimulator that works with your body within the deep dermis to help revitalize collagen production.
