What is BOTOX Treatment?
BOTOX Cosmetic belongs to a class of drugs called neuromodulators, which also includes Dysport. These injections work by blocking signals from the brain that tell muscles to contract, resulting in a temporary relaxation of the muscles. They are effective on wrinkles that are primarily caused by repeated facial expressions, such as crow’s feet and frown lines. Ellie skillfully uses neuromodulators to treat several areas of the face:
In addition to treating wrinkles, neuromodulators have non-cosmetic indications, too. At Essential Aesthetics in Danville, Ellie often administers BOTOX injections to help treat jaw tension and TMJ, as well as excessive perspiration.
BOTOX Treatment for Men
BOTOX and Dysport treatments are seeing a great rise in popularity among men thanks to their subtle results. Ellie uses the product to reduce some of the signs of aging that bother men most, including frown lines or drooping brows. She understands that men have different aesthetic goals than women, and she works to create a customized treatment plan that addresses each patient’s concerns while preserving, and even enhancing, the masculine contours of his face. Neuromodulators can take the years off without creating “feminine” looking results.
BOTOX Injections for Sweating
In 2004, BOTOX injections were approved by the FDA to treat hyperhidrosis, a medical condition that causes excessive sweating. For these patients, Ellie administers BOTOX to areas that are prone to excessive perspiration—most commonly the underarms, feet, hands, or head. When administered for this purpose, BOTOX injections are made just beneath the skin.
Although sweating is an important way for the human body to regulate its temperature, “deactivating” sweat glands in 1 or 2 treatment areas will not have an effect on your ability to thermoregulate.
Are You a Candidate for BOTOX?
BOTOX treatment has been trusted by physicians and patients for many years thanks to its effective treatment of lines, wrinkles, and many medical conditions. Neuromodulators are typically very well-tolerated by most patients. However, in order to be eligible for treatment, you should have an understanding of their limitations. BOTOX and Dysport are best for making changes to specific lines and wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement. Ellie also uses them to reduce the size of the masseter muscles, lift a sagging brow, and more.
BOTOX and Dysport injections may not be right for you if you:
- Have certain medical conditions such as heart disease or a bleeding disorder
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a known allergy to botulinum toxin
Preparing for Your BOTOX Treatment
We recommend abstaining from alcohol, aspirin, and other substances that have a blood thinning effect for at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. During your consultation, you and Ellie more thoroughly discuss your aesthetic goals as well as what you can expect from treatment.
In some cases, you may determine that adding dermal fillers to your BOTOX treatment will enhance your results. This combination treatment is often called a “nonsurgical facelift” or a “liquid lift.”
Treatment with injectables is efficient, comfortable, and brief. Ellie begins by preparing your skin with a gentle cleanser to remove makeup, dirt, oil, and other contaminants. She then makes several quick injections, precisely targeting the muscles responsible for the wrinkles you wish to treat. She may ask you to smile, frown, or squint to help her better visualize the areas that need special attention. During each injection, you may feel a quick pinch. The entire procedure is typically complete within about 30 minutes.
You’re free to return to your usual activities immediately after treatment. However, for the remainder of the day, you should avoid touching your face without washing your hands, as this can lead to infection. You can expect some swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising near your injection sites. However, these symptoms typically go away on their own within a couple of days.
Neuromodulators do not take effect instantly. Instead, their results take several days to develop. Your results last for about 4 months, at which point you can return to Essential Aesthetics in Danville for a touch-up.Back to Top
