Laser Tattoo Removal
There are plenty of reasons you may be considering having a tattoo removed. But one thing is certain – if you’re already asking Should I?, then the answer is most definitely Yes.
Until recent years, covering up a tattoo was one of your only options. Essential Aesthetics is proud to employ the latest technology, including the PiQo4, a comprehensive skin toning and rejuvenation treatment based on photoacoustic energy.
We also have the Lumenis M22 Q-Switched Nd:YAG, a modular multi-application platform that can work wonders on dark tattoos.
The revolutionary PiQo4 laser offers 4 wavelengths in order to treat the broadest range of pigment/tattoo colors, on the widest range of skin types. Its four wavelengths – 1064 nm, 532 nm, 650 nm, and 585 nm – target 9 of the most frequently used tattoo colors ranging from light orange to dark black. Larger spot sizes allow deeper maintenance of penetration into the dermis and better dispersal of ink particles, while decreasing the chance of blistering and scarring on the skin’s surface. The PiQo4 provides up to ten times more energy than other laser systems and offers four specific wavelengths to treat the broadest range of pigment on the widest range of skin types.
The M22 Q-Switched Nd:YAG uses ultrashort laser pulses to target the tattoo ink in the skin and break it into small particles that are naturally dissolved by your body. This technology is only effective to the ink and does not harm the surrounding skin.
What is Laser Tattoo Removal?
The sight of a mark on the body can leave a mark on the mind and color the way live is lived and remembered. Laser tattoo removal is a fascinating process. Since the inks used in tattooing are made of solid particles similar to pigmented lesions, they can likewise be targeted and eliminated by certain lasers. The depth of the pigments within the skin, type of ink, and color of ink all play a factor in how (or if) they can be removed.
PiQo4 offers up to 15 spot sizes, ranging from 2mm to 15 mm, allowing faster treatment results with shorter treatment sessions. This allows deeper maintenance of penetration into the dermis and better dispersal of the pigment or embedded ink particles.
Q-Switch lasers like those incorporated in the Lumenis M22 release intense energy pulses in short durations, which creates an extremely rapid thermal expansion of the tattoo ink. This fragments the pigment into particles, which will gradually become shallower with time until they fade away.
Am I a Good Candidate?
With PiQo4 you can erase the rainbow:
Black – This is the most common used ink used by tattoo artists and PiQo4’s 1064 nm wavelength energy is ideal for these inks, even on a darker skin.
Green – 650 nm wavelengths is most effectively used on greens, the third most popular ink color for tattoos.
Red – The second most common tattoo ink color, the 532 nm wavelength has 10 times the energy of other laser systems, allowing it to achieve faster clearance of red pigment.
Other – 585 nm is used on the blues, purples, and other colors completing the removal of multicolor tattoos.
Dark tattoos on light skin typically experience the most significant improvement from laser removal, and the denser the ink, the more treatments will be necessary for the pigment to dissipate. However, the customization available with the Lumenis M22 means this procedure is also safe and effective for dark skin tones, along with dissipation of lighter colors like pinks and yellows.
What to Expect During the Procedure?
Your tattoo removal journey will begin with a consultation with our clinical director, Elham “Ellie” Zarnegar. She will evaluate your tattoo and decide which treatment would best accommodate your needs.
During the treatment with PiQo4, you will hear the laser fire as loud, audible popping sounds, and then feel heat over the general area of the skin. The treated area will feel as if it were sunburned. Immediately after treatment, there will be a whitish “frosting” over the tattoo as well as some swelling and mild redness. This is natural and should resolve within a few hours.
The M22 requires a local anesthetic to be applied to the treatment area before beginning treatment. During the treatment, ultrashort laser pulses will be applied to the tattoo area. Treatment can take anywhere from 15-45 minutes depending on the size of the tattoo being treated. You may feel heat on the tattoo area as well as a feeling similar to a band aid being ripped off. Immediately after treatment, whitish bubbled will appear on the treated tattoo area, accompanied by some mild redness and swelling which should resolve within 24 hours.
Your tattoo removal will begin with a consultation with our clinical director, Elham “Ellie” Zarnegar, who will evaluate your tattoo and walk you through the process. How many treatments you will need will depend on the size and intensity of the tattoo, the colors incorporated in it, and how deep the pigments are found within your skin.
Some patients find the procedure a little uncomfortable, but a topical cream applied ahead of time can make the treatment gentler. The M22 also utilizes a “Top-Hat” beam profile for tattoo removal, which minimizes epidermal damage, tissue textural changes and the occurrence of scarring. This homogeneous distribution of energy reduces the chances of hot spots occurring in the beam, giving Ellie the most precise tool possible to achieve your goals.
What Kind of Results Can I Expect?
Since every combination of tattoo and skin tone is different, Ellie will be best able to discuss with you individually the results you can expect from our tattoo removal treatments. Darker colors may be more effectively removed than lighter pigments, and multiple treatments will likely need to be scheduled, with time in between for your skin to revitalize itself. But with a little patience, your tattoo can become nothing more than a memory.
